Guide to Install M.U.G.E.N - Part 3

Hi M.U.G.E.N-Fans!!

In this part, we are going to see, how to add some more characters to your game, because playing with Kong Fu Man all the time is, quite honestly, boring.

Before we add more characters, make sure you have completed Part 1 and Part 2 of this guide, because you will not be able to follow the instructions otherwise.

First, you have to download a characters. There are many pages, where you can download and choose from characters. Lets go to Pot's Mugen Page for example. Select a character and download it. Here is how you add it.
  1. Go and download Pocket Shin Gouki as an example for your game. It comes in a .rar-file and you will need WinRAR to open it. If you do not have WinRAR, search it on download.com and install it.
  2. You will find a folder called PocShinGouki in the rar-file. Select it and click on "Extract", which you find in the symbol bar of WinRAR. Now, select the folder where you installed Mugen on the right and then click on the folder /chars and click "OK". (NOTE: Sometimes when you extract a character into the chars folder the contents are not always put into a nice folder with the character's name on it. What you need to do then is to cut and paste all of the contents into a new folder in the chars folder. Make sure that the name of the folder matches that of the def file in that folder and the name of the character in the select.def file. Or else he/she will not show up in the selection screen during game play.)
  3. Now, lets go in the Mugen-Folder and go in the /data-Folder and open the File "select.def" with an editor like Notepad. Scroll down until you find the following passage:
    ;CAPCOM-------------------------------------------------------^go upwards---
;Mid Point-START ADDING CHARACTERS FROM HERE AND GO OUTWARD!!!
    ;SNK--------------------------------------------------------vgo downwards---
Now, above this passage, you find a lot of "randomselect"-lines. Scroll up until you find
randomselect; Leave this as random select
We are going to go in the next line which should say "randomselect", too.
  4. Now, delete the 2nd "randomselect" (right after the "Leave this as random select") and put in the following text:
    PocShinGouki, , order=1
What this means is that the game is going to look for the folder named "PocShinGouki" in the /chars folder and will include this character into the game.
  5. Now, start the game and see if you character is added! Enjoy adding some more characters.
In a later chapter, we will see what order=1 means.

Go on the the next part, where we will see, how to add stages to the game.

If you have problems with adding characters, just write a comment, I'll be happy to help you with it.

Have fun today!!
Lord James
